Jasprit Bumrah struck in the very first delivery, trapping Patthum Nissanka in front of the stumps with a superb yorker. Siraj then followed up with a double-wicket maiden, dismissing Dimuth Karunaratne and Sameera Samarickwarma in quick succession. Mohammed Shami then joined the party, picking up the wicket of Charith Asalanka in his first over to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 14/5.

Sri Lanka never really recovered from the early setback, and they eventually ended up losing the match by a record margin of 302 runs. It was the biggest defeat ever in an ODI World Cup match for India, and it was a testament to the dominance of the Indian bowlers.

Earlier in the day, India had posted a mammoth total of 357 runs on the board, thanks to half-centuries from Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer. Gill was the top scorer with 92 runs, while Virat and Iyer contributed 88 and 92 runs respectively. Dilshan Madushanka was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, picking up his maiden five-for. However, his efforts were in vain, as the Indian batsmen were simply too good on the day.
