Dale Steyn made a comeback on the cricketing field earlier this month after spending a complete year without playing any single game. However, he has returned to Cape Town for the second round of his rehabilitation in order to regain Test match fitness.
According to Cricbuzz, head of Cricket South Africa’s medical team Shuaib Manjra said “We’re comfortable with the progress he’s making but we don’t want to push him too much. We’re satisfied that he’s getting there.”
Steyn returned against Knights, where he was looking to end the match with minimal damage. He ended the match with 1/25 in 3 overs before recording figures of 1/20 and 2/16 in the next respective matches versus Warriors and Cape Cobras.
Veteran fast bowler last donned the national dress in Australia, where he broke a bone of his shoulder during Perth Test in November 2016. Meanwhile, Manjra feels that they can’t risk recovery of a fast bowler in speeding up the whole process.
“One of the risks we’ve found is when there is a sudden ramp-up. If a guy hasn’t been bowling much and then you suddenly ramp him up, the risk of injury goes up significantly. We’re concerned about not ramping (Steyn) up too much, so we’re allowing him to bowl, then go and rest, and then go back and bowl,” he added.
At the same time Team Doctor feels that he should regain confidence in bowling before heading into an international match. From now on, Cricket South Africa will continue his rehabilitation with a biokineticist in Cape Town.
Steyn’s return can boost South Africa’s hopes in the upcoming big home season, where they will first host India before Australia’s arrival.
