On Friday, the disgraced Australian opener, David Warner was named as captain of Sylhet Sixers in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League, taking over from Nasir Hossain. Sixers are the third T20 franchise Warner will have played for since being handed a 12-month suspension in March for his role in the ball-tampering scandal.

Despite the fact that he has not been allowed to play for New South Wales in domestic cricket and not even in the Big Bash League, Warner turned out in the Global T20 Canada tournament and the Caribbean Premier League over the past few months. His ban, as well as that of former Australia captain Steve Smith, will conclude at the end of March 2019.

The decision to name Warner as the captain came after many discussions and considerations. It has been learned that the franchise owners have unanimously agreed to change the captain for the upcoming season. Apparently, the team management wanted a more experienced player at the helm as they believe that the tournament will be a highly competitive one this year. Also, they hope that the team will be benefitted with Warner’s leadership experience.

Earlier this year, David was also barred play for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the last edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). while playing in the other T20 leagues, he scored just 109 runs in eight innings at a strike-rate of 114.73 for Winnipeg Hawks in the GLT20 and followed it up with 220 runs in nine innings at a strike-rate of 111.67 for St Lucia Stars in the CPL.

The Bangladesh Premier League is scheduled to commence on January 5, 2019. Nepal legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane is Sylhet’s second overseas player after Warner.

Warner will be joined in the league by Steven Smith, who had earlier signed up with Comilla Victorians.
