India started the day on their overnight first innings score 250/9 and the overnight unbeaten batsman Mohammed Shami was caught behind on the first ball of the day that ended their innings on 250 runs.

Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood (3/52) finished that innings by taking three wickets while the other bowlers Mitchell Starc (2/63), Pat Cummins (2/49) and Nathan Lyon (2/83) all bagged two wickets each.

In reply, Australia lost their opener Aaron Finch on the duck on the third ball of that innings. The hosts lost their wickets in regular intervals and some batsmen lost their wickets after getting well settled down.

Debutant opener Marcus Harris was dismissed on 26 runs while Usman Khawaja scored 28 off 125 balls. Shaun Marsh (2) and the skipper Tim Paine (5) both departed cheaply while Peter Handscomb played a knock of 34 runs.

Only Travis Head managed to protect his wicket against the dominant Indian bowlers as he played a very handy knock of unbeaten 61 runs off 149 balls (6 fours). The 24-year-old left-handed middle-order batsman Head completed his half-century in 103 balls. His good patience innings is helping Australia to fight back in this crucial innings.

When Australia was struggling on 127/6, just like the visitors faced on the previous day, Head had a crucial 50-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Pat Cummins who stayed a good amount of time in the crease before losing his wicket on 10 runs. Just after the visitors took the second new ball, Cummins lost his wicket through the lbw.

At the end of the day, Australia was batting on 191/7 while Mitchell Starc was playing with Head and they had already the unbroken 14-run partnership for the eighth wicket.
