During the third final of the VB Series in 2006 at Brisbane, Adam Gilchrist scored his 14th ODI century, 122 (91), with the help of 13 fours and four sixes. Having lost the last final at Sydney by 167 runs, Marvan Atapattu, the then Sri Lankan captain, had won the toss and chose to bat.
On the back of half-centuries from Kumar Sangakkara (59), Mahela Jayawardene (86) and Russell Arnold (76), Sri Lanka ended scoring 266-9 in 50 overs. With bowling figures of 10-1-44-3, Nathan Bracken was the pick of the Australian bowlers.

The Australians never looked in any sort of trouble during the chase as Gilchrist provided them with a fiery start. In which was the then fastest ODI century in Australia, Gilchrist reached his century in 67 balls. His opening partner in Simon Katich scored his maiden ODI century, 107* (142), with the help of nine fours. With bowling figures of 10-1-50-1, Muttiah Muralitharan was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers.
