Delhi Daredevils Changes Their Name Ahead Of IPL 2019 Auction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) team Delhi Daredevils (DD) has changed their name to Delhi Capitals (DC) for the new upcoming season (IPL 2019). During their new name announcement on Tuesday (December 4), the franchise has also revealed their new logo.

Like the most of present participated IPL teams, Delhi Daredevils also started their IPL journey from the inaugural edition of this tournament (2008). In January 2008, The GMR group – a property development company – had a successful bid for ownership of the Delhi-based team for USD 84 million.

In March 2018, just ahead of the IPL 2018, GMR sold the 50% stake of the franchise to Jindal South West (JSW) Sports – Mumbai-based steel company, for USD 77 million.

Among the currently available IPL teams, Delhi is the only team who have never reached an IPL final. Delhi Daredevils’ best records were to play semi-finals (IPL 2008 and IPL 2009) or Qualifier 2 (IPL 2012).

Apart from finishing among the top fours for the three times in IPL history, DD had also the results of 5th (among 8 teams) in 2010, 10th (among 10 teams) in 2011, 9th (among 9 teams) in 2013, 8th (among 8 teams) in 2014, 7th (among 8 teams) in 2015, 6th (among 8 teams) in 2016, 6th (among 8 teams) in 2017 and 8th (among 8 teams) in 2018.

The DD side also featured in Champions League T20 for twice 2009 and 2012, where they finished their journey in the league stages and the semi-finals respectively.

According to the report of New York-based finance body Duff & Phelps, DD has the 2018 brand value of $52 million, 18% increase from the last year ($44 million) despite finishing at the final position in IPL 2018.

On the other hand, the London-headquartered valuation company, Brand Finance revealed that DD has the 2018 brand value of $44 million, 8% growth from the last year.

Before the 2019 IPL Auction that will be held in Jaipur on December 18, Delhi Capitals has INR 25.50 crore in their purse. During the recently concluded trading window, the team released 10 players and traded in one player against three traded out players with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Currently, Delhi Capitals has 15 players (10 Indian players and 5 overseas players) in their squad while 10 more players (7 Indian players and 3 overseas players) can be added for the IPL 2019.
