New Zealand have suffered an injury setback ahead of the opening ODI against India, with experienced opener Devon Conway ruled out of the first match after sustaining a concussion during a training session at Eden Park in Auckland. The five-match ODI series begins on Wednesday (November 4), with the hosts now facing uncertainty over their opening combination.

According to a statement released by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Tuesday, Conway and fast bowler Matt Henry collided while attempting to take a catch during the team’s training session. Both players received immediate medical attention and underwent Head Injury Assessments. While Henry’s condition is still being monitored, further medical examinations confirmed that Conway had suffered a concussion, ruling him out of Wednesday’s series opener.

“Devon Conway and Matt Henry collided while attempting a catch during the Blackcaps training today at Eden Park. Both players were immediately treated by medical staff on-site and received Head Injury Assessments. Conway was taken to A&E for further examination, which confirmed a concussion that has ruled him out of the first ODI against India tomorrow (on November 4),” NZC stated.

The board also confirmed that both players would remain under medical observation, with updates on their availability for the remainder of the ODI series to follow.

In Conway’s absence, wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert is expected to partner the other opener at the top of the order. The right-hander was added to New Zealand’s squad for the first three ODIs on Monday. He recently featured in all five T20Is against India and impressed with 93 runs off just 50 deliveries during the 192-run chase in Hamilton on November 1.

Conway, 35, has scored 1,692 runs in 43 ODIs for New Zealand, and his absence will be a considerable blow to the hosts. Meanwhile, there is no official confirmation regarding Henry’s availability for the opening match, although he is believed to be fit to play.
