Former Indian batting legend Dilip Vengsarkar has thrown his weight behind the national side ahead of their much-anticipated five-Test series against England, beginning June 20. While acknowledging the void left by the recent Test retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the 69-year-old remains optimistic, stressing that the first two matches of the series will set the tone for India’s performance.

“We have a strong and capable team. The opening two Tests are going to be key — they could decide the momentum of the entire series,” Dilip Vengsarkar told IANS. “I think this is the perfect stage for new talent to step up and make a mark. I am confident India will do well.”
Vengsarkar, who scored 6,868 runs in 116 Tests for India, also had words of encouragement for the next generation of cricketers. He praised young talents like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre — standout performers from IPL 2025 — as well as promising Mumbai wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu, all of whom have been included in the India U-19 squad for the England tour.

Mhatre will captain the side, which will play a 50-over warm-up game, followed by a five-match Youth ODI series and two multi-day matches against England U-19 between June 24 and July 23. Kundu has been named vice-captain.

“It’s great to see Ayush, Vaibhav, and Abhigyan getting this opportunity. I’ve seen Kundu closely — he’s a smart player and a very competent wicketkeeper. The England tour will be a fantastic platform for them to prove themselves,” said Dilip Vengsarkar. “The IPL exposure they’ve received will be a huge confidence booster.”

On being asked about his pick for the IPL 2025 winner, Vengsarkar leaned towards two franchises that have yet to taste championship success. “RCB and Punjab Kings have come close several times but haven’t crossed the line. I’d love to see one of them finally win it — it would mean a lot to the players, the franchises, and their fans,” he added.
