Shubman Gill continued his excellent run in ODI cricket by scoring 110 off 108 balls during India’s successful run chase against the West Indies on September 27. The century was Gill’s 10th in the format and came in an important series as India continue their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Gill is leading India in the ongoing three-match home ODI series against the West Indies. Since taking over as India’s ODI captain from Rohit Sharma, he has scored 714 runs in 12 innings at an average of 71.40. However, his captaincy journey has produced mixed results, with India securing only one ODI series victory during his tenure so far.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has now shared his assessment of Gill’s leadership. While praising his batting ability and the respect he has earned within the Indian dressing room, Karthik believes Gill must become more assertive as captain.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik highlighted Gill’s development and consistency in ODI cricket. He also pointed to Gill’s return to the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings in July 2026, following his impressive performances against England.

“I think it is a fair statement, we all know how talented Shubman Gill is, and how efficient he has been in this format. I think he has not only grown in stature, but people respect him, and now he needs to stand up for himself as the leader,” Dinesh Karthik said.

The former wicketkeeper added that Gill has already established himself among the leading batters in the world, particularly in ODIs, but his next challenge is to translate that consistency into effective leadership.

Karthik also explained what Gill needs to do to build his authority within the team. He believes the India captain must identify his preferred core group and back those players consistently, allowing them to develop confidence in their roles.

India’s current squad has largely been shaped under chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, meaning Gill inherited an established team structure. According to Karthik, the captain now needs to put his own stamp on that setup.

Gill’s ability to identify 12-13 dependable players, back them throughout the build-up and understand their strengths could prove important as India prepare for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
