1986: at Headingley – India won by 279 runs

It was another dominating victory for India in the low-scoring Test match which was the second Test of three-match Test series at Headingley. Indian skipper Kapil Dev decided to bat first after winning the toss. With the help of Dilip Vengsarkar’s crucial 61-run knock and some fighting knocks by the other batsmen, India managed to score 272 runs before getting all-out.

In reply, Roger Binny’s brilliant 13-1-40-5 spell helped the Indian team to bowl out the hosts by just 102 runs. Middle-order batsman Bill Athey (32) was the only batsman in that innings to reach the 20-run mark.

India started their second innings with a big lead of 170 runs. Vengsarkar again performed brilliantly as this time he scored an outstanding unbeaten century of 102* while India was bowled out for just 237 runs. English left-arm pacer John Lever (4/64) and right-arm pacer Derek Pringle (4/73) picked up four wickets each in that innings.

Chasing down the 408-run target, English team was bundled out for just 128 runs as the skipper Mike Getting (31*) was the only batsman to reach the 30-run mark. The left-arm spinner Maninder Singh (4/26) got four wickets in that innings. Undoubtedly, Vengsarkar won the Player of the Match award for his brilliant batting performances.

With this victory, India led the three-match Test series by 0-2 and secured their second Test series victory on the English soil.
