2002: at Headingley – India won by an innings and 46 runs
It was the third Test of four-match Test series at Headingley where India dominated over the hosts and leveled the series by 1-1. Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly won the toss and didn’t hesitate to bat first. While the opener Sanjay Banger scored 68 runs, the three top Indian batsmen Rahul Dravid (148), Sachin Tendulkar (193) and the skipper Sourav Ganguly (128) smashed centuries and organized a giant total of 628/8 before their declaration.
In reply, only the opener Michael Vaughan (61) and the wicketkeeper-batsman Alec Stewart (78*) played the 50+ knocks and England was bundled out for just 273 runs. Indian spinners Anil Kumble (3/93) and Harbhajan Singh (3/40) shared six wickets between them. India had a massive lead of 355 runs and also forced the hosts for follow-on.
This time, only the Nasser Hussain (110) scored 50+ runs who ultimately played a century knock, but it went in vain as they were bundled out for just 309 runs and India managed a big victory by an innings and 46 runs. While Anil Kumble (4/66) was the highest wicket-taker in the last innings, Rahul Dravid won the Player of the Match award. It was India’s first Test victory on the England soil after 16 years.
