1986: at Lord’s – India won by 5 wickets

It was the first Test of the three-match Test series that was played at Lord’s. Indian skipper Kapil Dev decided to field first after winning the toss. With the help of the opener Graham Gooch’s century (114) and the middle-order batsman Derek Pringles’ 63-run knock, England managed to put 294 runs on the board while the Indian pacer Chetan Sharma (5/64) grabbed five wickets.

In reply, Mohinder Amarnath’s 69 and Dilip Vengsarkar’s 126 not out helped the Indian team to score 341 runs and took an important 47-run lead at the end of the first innings fights. The right-arm English pacer Graham Dilley (4/146) took the most wickets in that innings.

In the second innings, England was bundled out for just 180 runs and put a winning target of 134 runs for India. While Mike Getting (40) scored the highest runs in that innings, Kapil Dev was the best bowler with 4/52 bowling figure.

The first innings lead proved crucial in the game as Indian team chased the target after losing five wickets. Ravi Shastri (20*) and skipper Kapil Dev (23*) secured the victory while Dilip Vengsarkar (33) scored the most runs in that innings. Kapil Dev won the Player of the Match award at the end of the game.

India won this first game of the three-match series by five wickets and led the series by 0-1.
