Chasing a mammoth 521-run target, England began the day five on Wednesday morning on 311/9. England batsmen Adil Rashid and James Anderson faced a total of 17 balls before Ashwin dismissed Anderson (11) to end the game.  England was bundled out for 317 runs in the fourth innings as India won this Test match by 203 runs. Rashid remained unbeaten on 33 runs. Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah finished the innings with the bowling figure of 29-8-85-5.

Earlier, the English skipper Joe Root decided to field first after winning the toss on day one of this Test match. After a solid 60-run opening partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul, Indian skipper Virat Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane carried the innings to set a good first innings total on the board. While Rahane was dismissed on 81 runs, Kohli (97) just missed the deserving century by just three runs. On the day two morning, India was bowled out for 329 runs in the first innings.

In reply, despite a good 54-run opening partnership, England was bundled out for just 161 runs and trailed by 168 runs at the end of the innings. Only Jos Buttler (39) reached the 30-run mark in that innings while Indian pace bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya (5/28) claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in international cricket.

India had another good opening partnership in their second innings that successfully carried by Cheteshwar Pujara and the skipper Kohli. While Pujara scored 72 runs, Kohli completed his century this time as he scored 103 runs. In the end, Hardik Pandya played a great knock who remained unbeaten on 52 off 52 balls and India scored 352/7 before the declaration. India put a massive target of 521 runs to win the game for the hosts England.

In reply, the hosts’ top-order batting collapsed as they were once 62/4. Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler battled hard and put an impressive 169-run partnership before another batting collapse to end their hope in the game. While Buttler (106) scored his maiden Test century, Stokes lost his wicket on 62 runs.

Indian skipper Kohli won the Player of the Match award for his brilliant batting performances in both the innings.
