Eng vs Ind (Third Test): Day One – Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane lead India to a good first innings total

After the disaster batting performances in the first two Tests of the five-match Test series in the ongoing England tour, Indian batsmen finally have shown some respectable fights in front of English bowlers on Saturday in the first innings of the third Test at Trent Bridge (Nottingham). At the end of the day, India was batting on 307/6.

Leading the series by 2-0, English captain Joe Root decided to field first after winning the toss. While England had only one change as Ben Stokes replaced Sam Curran, Indian skipper Virat Kohli made three changes in the playing XI. While the young wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has made his Test debut by replacing the injured wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, opener Shikhar Dhawan and pacer Jasprit Bumrah have returned to the squad as the replacement of opener Murali Vijay and left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav respectively.

Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul posted a good start with the 60-run partnership but then lost three quick wickets before the lunch break. While Dhawan and Rahul departed on 35 and 23 respectively, Cheteshwar Pujara was dismissed on the last ball of the first session for just 14 runs.

While India was 82/3 at the end of the first session, the second session was dominated by India who finished that session on 189/3 by adding 107/0. Skipper Virat Kohli and the vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane completed their half-centuries and focusing for the centuries.

After a crucial 159-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Kohli and Rahane, Rahane lost his wicket on 81 runs off 131 balls (12 fours). Later, the skipper Kohli was very close to his deserving century but failed to reach by just three runs as the leg-spinner Adil Rashid dismissed him on 97 runs (152 balls; 11 fours).

The debutant Rishabh Pant has begun his Test career with a sixer that he hit on his second ball and remained not out at the end of the day on 22 runs (32 balls; 2 fours and only six). Meanwhile, the all-rounder Hardik Pandya (18 runs off 58 balls; 4 fours) lost his wicket on the last ball of the day as India finished the day on 307/6.

At the end of the opening day, English pacer Chris Woakes (3/75) took the first three wickets while the pacers James Anderson (1/52) and Stuart Broad (1/64) and the leg-spinner Adil Rashid (1/46) picked up one wicket each.

  • Indian skipper Virat Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane put a crucial 159-run partnership for the fourth wicket. It is India’s fourth highest runs partnership for the fourth wicket in a Test innings on the English soil.
  • India skipper Virat Kohli was dismissed on 97 runs. He is the only second Indian captain to be dismissed on nervous nineties in a Test innings on the English soil. The first Indian captain was Sourav Ganguly who had been dismissed on 99 at Trent Bridge (Nottingham) in 2002.
  • English pacer James Anderson has taken the only wicket of Hardik Pandya and completed his 100 Test wickets against India. Only the second bowler in history to claim 100 or more Test wickets against India. Former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is on top of this list with 105 Test wickets against India.
  • English pacer James Anderson also becomes the first English bowler to claim 100 or more Test wickets against two different teams. Apart from taking 100 Test wickets against India, Anderson has also taken 104 Test against Australia.
  • English pacer James Anderson is just one wicket behind to become the most wicket taker in international cricket against India at home. Currently, he is the joint-leader in this list with the former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (both have taken 96 wickets).
