England, India lost two WTC points for slow over-rate

Both England and India have lost two points each from their World Test Championship tally for the slow over-rate during the first Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Apart from that, both sides will have to give 40 per cent of their match fees because of the aforesaid offence by match referee Chris Broad as well.

“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short,” ICC said in a release.

Both the captains – Joe Root and Virat Kohli – pleaded guilty and they have accepted that as well. However, on-field umpires Michael Gough and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire David Millns were in charge of this matter.

Notably, the first Test of the five-match series has ended in a draw as the rain has played the spoilsport on the final day. India were needed 157 runs more to win the match on the final day in pursuit of chasing 209 but due to rain, no game took place as well. The second Test of the series will begin on August 12 at Lord’s.
