South African captain Faf du Plessis has been ruled out from the remainder of the ongoing Sri Lanka tour due to suffering a shoulder injury.

In their ongoing Sri Lankan tour, after completion of two-match Test series, where South Africa surrendered by losing the series in the 2-0 margin, they are currently busy in the five-match ODI series where the visitors have already secured the series by leading 0-3 margins at the end of the third ODI. After completion of the ODI series, South Africa will end this tour with the one-off T20I.

During the third ODI at Kandy on last Sunday (August 5), Faf suffered a shoulder injury while attempting a catch. His return date hasn’t confirmed yet as it is expected that he needs around six weeks to make a full recovery.

The South African cricket team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee updated on Faf’s injury report, “Faf sustained an injury to one of the rotator cuff tendons in his right shoulder and will unfortunately be unavailable for the rest of the tour. He will need a rehabilitation period of up to six weeks to make a full recovery. His return date back to South Africa will be confirmed in due course.”

While his replacement hasn’t announced yet, the stand-in captain’s name for the remaining matches of the ODI series will be announced soon. The fourth ODI will be played on this Wednesday (August 8) at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium (Kandy).

The Protease captain played some important roles with the bat for his team in the ongoing Sri Lanka tour. After scoring most runs (105 runs) for struggling South Africa in the Test series, he also played two important knocks in the first two ODI matches (47 & 49), where the visitors won both the games by chasing down Sri Lanka’s first innings totals.
