CSA will organise a new T20 league with six teams

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced that they will finally organise a new T20 league consist of six teams. Though the details of the tournament haven’t announced yet, the board has announced the number of teams and few more things about the tournament.

In the last year, CSA was very close to organise the inaugural edition of T20 Global League where eight franchise teams would participate in the competition. But, just prior to the three weeks before the beginning, the tournament was cancelled due to the absence of a broadcast deal.

Now, CSA has cut out the two teams in the new T20 league as six teams will participate in the new T20 league and the new name of the competition will be announced.

On Tuesday, CSA Chief Executive Thabang Moroe announced the signing of new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA). After that, the decision of the new tournament was taken, while Moroe has also confirmed that the league will be launched at the end of 2018.

While there will be six teams participate in the new proposed competition, it is likely to be played a total of 32 games. However, it has not been decided yet whether the participating teams will be franchise based or not.

Talking about the new T20 league, Moroe said, “There will be certain criteria applied by Nielsen which will involve monies, the ability to pull crowds, infrastructure around you and governmental support. The process will be independent.

“The league continues as far as planning is concerned. We have continued to meet with the broadcasters and with corporates for sponsorship opportunities. But we are not as far as we would like to be in terms of sponsorship.”

On the other hand, Moroe has also confirmed that the other domestic T20 league Ram Slam T20 competition will go ahead where currently six teams participate. However, the new T20 league will be a different T20 competition.
