Punjab Kings endured another setback in IPL 2026 as their early-season dominance continues to fade. Despite a sensational individual performance from Cooper Connolly, PBKS fell short against Sunrisers Hyderabad in a high-scoring clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on May 6.

Connolly was the lone bright spot for Punjab, producing a remarkable unbeaten 107 off 59 deliveries — his maiden IPL century. Batting at No. 3, the 22-year-old showcased maturity and power in equal measure, striking seven fours and eight sixes at an impressive strike rate of 181.36. He reached his hundred in the final over, keeping PBKS in the contest until the very end.

However, the lack of support from the rest of the batting lineup proved costly. Chasing a daunting target of 236, Punjab managed only 202, with more than half of those runs coming from Connolly alone. The collapse around him underlined the team’s growing inconsistency, especially in pressure situations.

Earlier in the evening, Sunrisers Hyderabad delivered a complete batting performance to post a formidable 235/4. Contributions came from across the order, allowing them to dominate proceedings and maintain control throughout the match. Their disciplined bowling effort further ensured that PBKS never truly threatened the target.

Connolly’s innings, though ending in defeat, marked a significant milestone in his young career. Known primarily as a bowling all-rounder, he has now firmly established himself as a serious batting prospect. His century also places him among elite company in the franchise’s history. He is now the second PBKS batter after Chris Gayle to score a hundred against SRH, and notably the youngest to achieve the feat with eight sixes in a single innings.
