The emergence of 15-year-old cricket prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in IPL 2026 has triggered a fresh debate, with social activist CM Shivakumar Nayak threatening legal action against the Rajasthan Royals over what he described as “child labour” in professional cricket. Sooryavanshi, who has quickly become one of the most talked-about young talents in Indian cricket, has already faced unusual controversies this season.

From criticism over professionalism to bizarre rumours about AI technology in his equipment, the teenage sensation continues to face intense public scrutiny. However, the latest issue centres around his age and whether a minor should be allowed to participate in a high-profile tournament like the IPL.
During a televised debate on a Kannada news channel, Nayak strongly criticised the franchise for fielding a 15-year-old player in a professional sporting environment.

“This 15-year-old boy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from Rajasthan Royals, is being exploited. He is just a child, and they have brought him into the IPL to play professional cricket. This is nothing but child labour,” Nayak said during the debate.
He further argued that the teenager should prioritise academics instead of professional sports at such a young age, claiming the move sends the wrong message to aspiring youngsters across the country. Nayak also stated that he intends to file a police complaint and pursue legal action against the franchise for allegedly violating child rights laws.

The comments, however, sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many fans and experts pointing to past examples of teenage cricketers succeeding at the highest level. Several users highlighted how Sachin Tendulkar made his international debut for India at the age of 16 before going on to become one of the greatest batters in cricket history.
Supporters also referenced the existence of Under-19 cricket structures worldwide, arguing that talented young athletes have long been introduced to elite competition at an early age.

Importantly, Sooryavanshi’s participation aligns with the International Cricket Council’s eligibility rules. International Cricket Council regulations allow players aged 15 or above to compete in international cricket and ICC events. The ICC framework also includes provisions for exceptional talents under the age threshold, which reportedly applied to Sooryavanshi during his Under-19 appearances.
Despite the controversy, the teenager’s rise continues to generate significant attention, making him one of the most closely watched young cricketers in IPL 2026.
