The 37-year-old Gautam Gambhir was not only one of the best opening batsmen in the IPL history, but he was also known as one of best captains in this tournament history. He has played 154 IPL matches where he has scored 4,217 runs with the average of 31.23. Starting the IPL career for Delhi Daredevils (DD), Gambhir played his best IPL term in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from 2011 to 2017.

Prior to the last season’s auction, Gambhir wished to play for Delhi Daredevils and that’s why KKR didn’t retain him. After DD bought him at auction and handed over the captaincy, the franchise failed to perform on the field. In the middle of the season, he stepped down from the captaincy due to his poor batting form and team’s poor performances.

Soon, Gambhir was dropped from the playing XI and he was never brought back again into the playing XI. So, DD’s recent decision to release him from the squad wasn’t very surprising. Playing only six games in IPL 2018, Gambhir scored only 85 runs with the average of 17.00. According to the present situation, it will be very tough for Gambhir to return to the IPL again.
