During the 31st match of the IPL 2013 between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors India, Chris Gayle scored his fourth IPL century, a career-best 175 (66) with the help of 13 fours and 17 sixes as Bangalore defeated Pune by a whopping 130 runs.

Even after half a decade of cricket, it is still the highest individual score in T20s as Gayle surpassed Brendon McCullum’s 158* against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008 at Kolkata. In the last two years Hamilton Masakadza (162*) and Adam Lyth (161) came close enough to break Gayle’s record, but eventually couldn’t do it.

Here is the list of five batsmen who have the potential to break Gayle’s record in this season of the IPL:

David Warner

5. David Warner (SunRisers Hyderabad) – The captain of SunRisers Hyderabad has the ability in him to take over Gayle’s monumental record. Having scored three IPL centuries and 36 half-centuries, Warner has registered the highest number (39) of fifty+ scores in the IPL. Generally, a consistent run-scorer, it wouldn’t be a surprise watching Warner play such an innings in this season of the IPL.

Glenn Maxwell

4. Glenn Maxwell (Delhi Daredevils) – It would not be wrong to say that Glenn Maxwell has not yet fully stood tall on his potential. Six half-centuries from 57 matches is not what you expect from someone who entered the game with a reputation of a swashbuckler. Having said that, one still feels that Maxwell is yet to play his best IPL season with the bat. In Delhi Daredevils, he has a franchise which is coached by a familiar face for Maxwell in Ricky Ponting. On his day, it is difficult to stop him. His 145* (65) against Sri Lanka at Kany is a prime example of the same.

Virat Kohli

3. Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – With 4,418 runs at an average of 37.44 and a strike rate of 129.82, Virat Kohli is the second-highest run-scorer in the IPL. He also has to his name, four IPL centuries, only the second player to do so. Given his recent form, which is next to impossible, Kohli might well break this record as well in this season of the IPL.

Colin Munro

2. Colin Munro (Delhi Daredevils) – Colin Munro has made a name out of himself in the last year or so. Recently, he became the first batsman to score three T20I centuries. He would want to continue the same form in this season of the IPL. Given his knack of scoring centuries in the shortest version of the game, he is a fine candidate to score the highest individual score in T20s.

Indians
Rohit Sharma

1. Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) – We all are aware of Rohit Sharma and his mastery of scoring big daddy hundreds in the limited-overs format. For someone who has scored a record three double centuries in ODIs, scoring 175 in a T20 match is a close certainty. The only condition which might hurt his chances is if he bats in the middle order for Mumbai Indians, something which he has done in the recent past.
