India head coach Gautam Gambhir has opened up about the mental exhaustion caused by the demanding international cricket calendar but insisted that he remains strong enough to handle the pressure. Despite admitting that the continuous travel and coaching commitments have taken a toll on him, Gambhir maintained that fatigue would never become an excuse for him or his team.

The India head coach made these remarks following India’s defeat in the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand in Hamilton. The hosts chased down the target of 192 runs in just 18 overs to register a convincing victory in the series finale.
The New Zealand tour marked Gambhir’s 12th series as India’s head coach in 2026. Unlike players, whose workloads are managed through rotation and rest under the BCCI medical team’s supervision, Gambhir has had very few opportunities to take a break while overseeing India’s assignments across formats.

Even during the 2026 Asian Games, when VVS Laxman took charge of India’s T20I team, Gambhir remained occupied with the ODI series against the West Indies at home. He now faces another demanding assignment, with India scheduled to play five ODIs and two Tests against New Zealand.
Speaking after the T20I series, Gambhir acknowledged feeling mentally drained but refused to use it as a reason for underperformance.
“In my dictionary, my directory, and my ideology, there is no place for fear, and that word does not exist in my life. I think we are professionals, and I’ve always believed that there are no excuses,” Gautam Gambhir said. “Yes, I have [felt mentally drained], to be honest, but I am strong enough to manage that. I’m strong enough to take it… that I can take the pressure, I can take the bullet,” he added.

Gambhir also highlighted the difficulties India faced before the start of the five-match T20I series. The team arrived in New Zealand on October 20 and had just one training session before playing the opening match in Christchurch on October 22.
Considering the 15-hour flight, unfamiliar playing conditions and limited preparation time, Gambhir credited his players for their performances in the first three matches, which helped India secure an unassailable 3-0 lead. “Look, first of all, obviously it’s an incredible effort because the boys got only one day to prepare,” he said.

He further praised the team’s ability to adapt to different weather conditions and ground dimensions while facing an experienced New Zealand side on home soil. Gautam Gambhir felt the team’s achievement deserved recognition, particularly because several players were touring New Zealand for the first time. He concluded that producing such performances after limited preparation was something Indian cricket should appreciate and remember.
