“Pressure? What pressure?” is Gautam Gambhir’s unrepentant reply to the criticism that has been seen following the recent 0-3 Test series loss to New Zealand. The Indian head coach was preparing for the team’s departure to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy when he held a press conference with firm determination.
He spoke about his batting performance and increasing pressure during these interactions with characteristic directness. Asked whether he felt the “heat” from critics following that New Zealand whitewash, Gambhir was forthright and belligerent.
“What difference does social media make in my life, or anyone’s life? When I took up this job, I always knew it was going to be both incredibly challenging and prestigious. I don’t feel pressured by outside voices because my job is to be completely honest with myself and the team,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to his role rather than the clamour of critics.

When asked about his experience in coaching, Gambhir pointed out that he was working with very resilient and dedicated players: “There are some incredibly tough people in that dressing room who have achieved remarkable things for the country and will continue to do so. It’s an absolute honour to be coaching them and representing India.”

Gautam Gambhir had his task cut out as expectations have been sky-high since his appointment to guide India to maintain its dominance across formats. However, successive losses in Tests and also in the 50-over game have dispelled doubts over whether he can adapt his success in the IPL, especially in T20s, to conditions where longer formats are dominant.

Even though Gambhir seems to have mastered the T20 formula, his strategy for Test and ODI cricket is now being questioned. This is against the backdrop of the Australia series, for which he faces major pressure to prove that he can effectively lead India in all formats of the game and regain the upper hand.
