Gautam Gambhir, the fiery former cricketer who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL titles, returns to the franchise in a new role – mentor. In a recent interview on the show Knights Unplugged, Gambhir revealed a conversation with KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan that reignited his passion for the team.

“He (Shah Rukh) told me the same thing that he told me in 2011 when I joined as a player. ‘This is your franchise; make it or break it,'” Gautam Gambhir shared. This statement echoes the trust Khan placed in him then, and now, as a mentor.

Gautam Gambhir’s confidence is unmistakable. He believes his experience and fiery leadership can shape the young KKR squad into a force to be reckoned with. “I assure you that whenever I leave this place, it will be in a much better position,” he declared.

However, Gautam Gambhir acknowledges his demanding personality, both on and off the field. “I’m a very tough guy to handle,” he admitted. He expressed his gratitude towards Shah Rukh Khan and CEO Venky Mysore for their unwavering support during his previous stint with KKR. “They have taken a lot of my tantrums and stubbornness for such a long period of time,” he added with a hint of humor.

KKR’s recent performance has been inconsistent. They reached the IPL 2022 final but fell short against Chennai Super Kings. The previous few years saw them floundering, finishing a disappointing seventh in 2023. The upcoming season offers a chance for redemption.

KKR’s opening match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens on March 23rd marks the beginning of their IPL 2024 campaign. With Gambhir’s fiery personality back in the mix, KKR fans can hope for a more competitive and successful season. Will Gambhir be able to replicate his past success as a player, but this time, as a mentor? Only time will tell.
