Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar throws his weight behind youngster Shubhman Gill saying he has a bright future for India. Gill made his international debut against New Zealand in the fourth One-Day International at Hamilton but failed to impress in his maiden outing. The hosts finally won a game after conceding first three games as well as the series.
Young Gill came in place of Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who has been rested from remainder New Zealand matches. He first came in the limelight after a sensational U19 World Cup in New Zealand, where he ran away with the man of the tournament award. Since then, he has impressed everyone with his talent and scored tons of runs for his domestic team Punjab.

He failed to impress on his debut match, but that doesn’t make his case any weaker as every Indian batsman failed in the fourth ODI. Kiwi pacers put on a show to dismiss India for 92 under 35 overs and then went on to chase the target in just 15 overs to win the game by 8 wickets.
Gavaskar is unmoved by a single match’s performance and feels Gill is tailor-made for international cricket.
“Well, for whatever little time he was there, he was a little bit tense, nervous. That’s understandable because he is playing for the country for the first time,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
“Even then, when Boult was swinging the ball, he was able to get in line, yes… he was hit by the short ball as well. I think this guy’s got a future, you have got to be patient with him.”
The former opener is pretty sure that Shubhman will get another chance in the fifth ODI while he sees Dinesh Karthik making way for MS Dhoni.

“My feeling is that they’ll probably have Dhoni coming in place of Karthik. Other changes will be based on the conditions in Wellington. I don’t see too many changes though. I am sure Shubman Gill will get another opportunity,” quoted Gavaskar.
The fifth ODI will be played on Sunday, where both teams will want to finish the series on high. Currently, India is leading the series by 3-1.
