Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar urges for a clarity in the roles of KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane in the One-Day International cricket. Both batsmen are regular in the Test side but when it comes to the white ball cricket, there has always been an uncertainty over their selection.
In his column for TOI, he highlighted Team Management’s rapid shuffling in the playing XI. “Rahul opens in Tests but is a middle-order batsman for T20 internationals and Rahane bats middle order in Tests but can find a place in one-dayers only as an opener,” Gavaskar wrote.
Former captain feels that Rahane may not be able to crack into the team as an opener despite a counter-attacking 48 off 68 balls in the second innings of Johannesburg Test. At the same time, he pointed towards Rahul, who plays in the middle-order when it comes to T20I cricket and opens in the red-ball cricket.

“Both may eventually not play but in their interest, it’s important to tell them that they are flexible players who should be ready to bat anywhere in the order,” he added.
He is very impressed with India’s batting performance in the second innings of Jo’burg Test, where the pitch turned naughty towards the end. “They showed the gumption, the guts and the determination to take the blows and hang in there,” he wrote.
India’s win in the third Test, he added, dispels the myth that their batsmen can’t handle pace. “Even the Don had his problems in the Bodyline series and no batsman in the world can put his hand on his heart and say he enjoys playing good fast bowling,” he commented.
Despite playing some exceptional cricket throughout the Test series, India couldn’t win anything more than a consolation victory in Johannesburg Test. They will be eyeing to turn the tables around in the ODI arena when both teams will fight for the number one rankings in this format.
