Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has finally responded to the growing speculation linking him with coaching roles for both the England Test team and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). While the veteran spinner stopped short of confirming or denying the reports, his carefully worded response has only added fuel to the ongoing rumours. Speaking on his official YouTube show ‘Ash Ki Baat’ alongside senior journalist Vimal Kumar, Ashwin briefly addressed the reports before shifting his focus to England’s future following Brendon McCullum’s departure as the men’s Test head coach.

Over the past few days, Ashwin’s name has emerged in connection with England’s vacant Test coaching position. The speculation intensified after news aggregator Johns claimed on X that Ashwin was among the candidates being discussed for the role and that preliminary meetings had reportedly taken place in the United States.

At the same time, Ashwin has also been linked with a possible coaching return to the Chennai Super Kings. Reports suggesting the end of Stephen Fleming’s long and successful tenure with the franchise have sparked discussions among fans, with many believing the former India spinner could be an ideal addition to the CSK coaching setup once he brings his playing career to a close.

When Vimal Kumar directly asked him about the England coaching rumours, Ravichandran Ashwin chose not to reveal much but hinted that clarity could arrive in the near future. “Give it a little time. I’ll tell you. Just give it some time,” Ashwin said with a smile, refusing to either confirm or dismiss the reports.

That was the only direct reference Ashwin made regarding his own future. Instead of elaborating further, he turned the discussion towards England’s Test team and the challenges awaiting whoever succeeds McCullum. Ashwin believes England’s ultra-aggressive approach under McCullum and former captain Ben Stokes transformed Test cricket by making it more entertaining, but he argued that the philosophy eventually became difficult to sustain.

According to him, England repeatedly let winning positions slip away because they refused to adapt to changing match situations. “There were so many occasions when England had the game completely under control, but they ended up losing simply because they ignored common sense. You just can’t afford to play Test cricket like that,” Ravichandran Ashwin observed.

The veteran off-spinner added that England are entering an important transition phase after McCullum’s exit and stressed that experienced batter Joe Root will play a crucial role in guiding the side through this period.

“It was becoming very difficult. It just wasn’t sustainable anymore. The model that McCullum and Stokes followed in Test cricket had reached a point where it became very hard to continue. Joe Root is a 24-carat gold Test batter, and his contribution will be incredibly important,” he explained.

Ashwin also expressed hope that England would bounce back strongly, insisting that a competitive England side is essential for the long-term health of Test cricket.

Before ending the episode, Ravichandran Ashwin was once again asked about the possibility of joining CSK’s coaching staff following the reported changes within the franchise. However, he once again chose not to address the speculation directly. Smiling, he thanked viewers for watching and signed off without offering any clarification. “I’d just like to thank everyone for joining us. Thank you so much for joining us on this episode,” he said.

Ashwin also revealed that his YouTube channel would soon feature a dedicated episode celebrating Stephen Fleming’s remarkable contribution to CSK. For now, his comments have done little to settle speculation, leaving the doors open on both the England Test coaching role and a potential future with Chennai Super Kings.
