At the end of the day one of the second Test at the new Perth Stadium (Optus Stadium), Australia is in the better position according to the expert views as the hosts ended the day on 277/6. Though the visitors India was in a good position at one important moment of the day, the former Aussie pacer Glenn McGrath feels that India has got caught up in the hype of green bouncy track that will be helpful for the pacers.
After winning the toss, the hosts Australia had a good start as the openers Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch provided a 112-run partnership. However, after breaking the opening partnership, the Indian bowlers dominated over the Aussie batsmen as the hosts suddenly went down to 148/4.
But the crucial 84-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Shaun Marsh and Travis Head helped the hosts to return to the game. Though both the batsmen were dismissed, Australia has already got a good total on the board as they have scored 277/6 at the end of the day.

Before the Test match, there was a huge hype of the green Perth track that it will be widely helpful for the pacers. The former Aussie pacer Glenn McGrath feels that the Indian skipper Kohli has got caught up in the hype of that as they have come up in this game with just four pacers and no regular spinners. McGrath feels that there is not the huge availability for the pacers what was the earlier hype.
Talking about this, McGrath said, “They have got caught up in the hype and felt this pitch was going to do everything, bounce, pace, carry, seam.”
On the other hand, the former World Cup-winning Australian captain Allan Border feels India has missed the trick by not selecting the regular spinner. The part-time off-spinner Hanuma Vihari, who has already picked up two wickets, has already shown on the day one that there is enough for the spinners despite a green bouncy track.
While the off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is injured and not available for this Test match, two left-arm spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are in the squad but both have been not selected for this game. Even Border feels that India shouldn’t change the team combination.
The former Aussie captain said, “I do think it’s good to have that variety in attack, and the India pace bowling they were tremendous in Adelaide. They got through the heat and the conditions of all five days, they kept running in so I don’t think they need another one. A spinner would have been ideal later on in the game in particular. One of Australia’s weaknesses in the past few years has been left-arm spin.”
