Renowned cricketer Harbhajan Singh recently lauded the selection committee’s decision to include promising talent Sanju Samson in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. Expressing his excitement, Singh looks forward to witnessing emerging players such as Samson, Tilak Varma, Rajat Patidar, and Deepak Chahar making their mark in the 50-over format.

Sanju Samson, with an impressive average of over 55 in 12 ODI innings, secured his spot over Suryakumar Yadav, adding an element of intrigue to the team composition. The reconsideration of Yadav’s selection followed a lackluster performance in the 2023 World Cup, where he managed only 106 runs across seven innings at an average of 17.66.

Despite sporadic appearances in the Indian setup, the wicketkeeper-batsman’s last ODI participation dates back to August in the West Indies, subsequently featuring in T20Is in Ireland. Despite consistent presence, he missed out on a spot in the World Cup squad. Harbhajan Singh shared his thoughts on the selection, expressing satisfaction with Samson’s inclusion.

“There is Sanju Samson [in ODIs]. It’s good news. Wicketkeeper-batsman because he is always the topic of why Samson is not getting picked. I am happy to see Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Rajat Patidar getting opportunities. Deepak Chahar has made his comeback,” he mentioned on his YouTube channel.

However, Harbhajan Singh expressed disappointment over the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal from the ODI series, believing the left-handed opener deserved a spot. He criticized the selection process for overlooking Jaiswal, who boasts impressive performances, including 266 runs in two Tests at an average of 88.66 and 312 runs in 11 T20Is.

Harbhajan Singh emphasized, “Let’s talk about Yashasvi Jaiswal. He is not part of this team. I think he should be part of this team [ODIs] as well. [He’s] A quality and tremendous player. The team is looking at him in Tests and T20Is but not in ODIs. There are a lot of flaws (in the selection process) that I can’t fathom.”
