Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh expressed his anger on DRS technology and supposed bad umpiring after Pakistan’s narrow 1-wicket defeat against South Africa in Chennai on Friday. The match was marred by a supposed controversial DRS (Decision Review System) call involving South African cricketer Tabraiz Shamsi. In the 46th over, Shamsi was given not out by the on-field umpire after Haris Rauf appealed for LBW.

Pakistan reviewed the decision, but the third umpire upheld the on-field decision due to umpire’s call. Harbhajan took to social media to vent his frustration, blaming “bad umpiring and bad rules” for costing Pakistan the match. He urged the ICC to change the rule, stating that if the ball is hitting the stump, the batsman should be out regardless of the umpire’s call.

Harbhajan Singh wrote: “Bad umpiring and bad rules cost Pakistan this game.. @ICC should change this rule .. if the ball is hitting the stump that’s out whether umpire gave out or not out doesn’t matter.. otherwise what is the use of technology??? @TheRealPCB vs #SouthAfrica #worldcup”.

Former South African captain Graeme Smith responded to Harbhajan’s post, stating that he agreed with Harbhajan’s opinion on umpire’s call, but pointed out that South Africa had also been on the receiving end of a marginal umpire’s call earlier in the match, when Rassie van der Dussen was given out LBW.

Graeme Smith wrote: “Bhajji, @harbhajan_singh I feel the same as you on umpires call, but @Rassie72 and South Africa can have the same feeling.?”

The last-wicket pair of Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi survived a couple of testing overs by the Pakistan pacers before Maharaj blasted a boundary to seal a memorable victory for South Africa. Pakistan’s defeat leaves them with very slim chances of making it to the knockout stage of the World Cup.
