Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player to face disciplinary action from the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the ongoing second Test against India in Colombo. Jayasuriya was officially reprimanded by the ICC on Tuesday after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The incident took place on the second day of the Test on Monday.
As a result of the breach, Jayasuriya received an official reprimand and one demerit point. It was his first offence under the ICC Code of Conduct in the previous 24 months, meaning the sanction did not lead to any further immediate punishment.
The Sri Lankan spinner admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Since Jayasuriya accepted both the charge and the punishment, there was no requirement for a formal hearing. The charge was brought by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid. Third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth official Prageeth Rambukwella were also involved in the disciplinary process.

Jayasuriya is now the third cricketer to be sanctioned during the Colombo Test. Earlier in the match, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando were both fined 25 per cent of their match fees and handed one demerit point following their heated exchange.

The incident between Jaiswal and Fernando occurred during the 17th over of India’s first innings, shortly after the Sri Lankan pacer dismissed the Indian batter. Jaiswal walked towards Fernando, and the pair exchanged words before the situation escalated. Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal, who leaned forward, resulting in contact between their heads.
Level 1 offences represent the least serious category under the ICC Code of Conduct. Depending on the nature and circumstances of an incident, a player can receive an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 per cent of the match fee, and one or two demerit points. In Jayasuriya’s case, the ICC decided on an official reprimand and one demerit point, with the spinner accepting the decision without contest.

On the cricketing front, India remain firmly in control of the second Test after declaring their first innings at 503/9. Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel scored impressive centuries, while India’s bowlers followed up with an excellent start. Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals in their first innings, leaving India in a commanding position. The visitors will now look to complete another victory and secure a 2-0 series sweep.
