The possibility of India touring Bangladesh later this year has received a significant boost, with fresh reports suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are actively discussing the schedule. If both boards reach an agreement on the dates and receive the necessary government clearance, the bilateral white-ball series is expected to be held in September 2026.

However, the proposed tour could impact India’s planned T20I series against Afghanistan, which may have to be rescheduled. India were initially scheduled to visit Bangladesh last year, but the tour was postponed due to diplomatic tensions between the two neighbouring countries.

Cricketing relations also came under strain following Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman ahead of IPL 2026. The Bangladesh Cricket Board later urged the ICC to shift its T20 World Cup fixtures out of India, citing security concerns. The request was ultimately rejected, with Scotland replacing Bangladesh in the tournament.

Despite those setbacks, recent developments indicate that ties between the two cricket boards are improving. According to a report by The Times of India, senior officials from the BCCI and BCB held productive discussions during the recent ICC meetings in London to explore the possibility of reviving the tour.

A BCCI source told the publication that the BCB is open to staging all matches at just two venues, with Dhaka and Chattogram emerging as the preferred hosts. The current proposal reportedly includes three T20Is at one venue and three ODIs at another, although conducting a single-format tour was also discussed during the meetings.

One of the biggest scheduling challenges remains India’s proposed T20I series against Afghanistan, which is expected to be hosted in New Delhi during the same period. While the series has not yet been officially announced, it could be pushed back if the Bangladesh tour receives the green light.

The BCCI source also confirmed that India’s commitment to Afghanistan was discussed during the talks but reiterated that any Bangladesh tour remains subject to approval from the Indian government.

India’s international calendar leaves a narrow opening in early September. The senior men’s team is scheduled to begin a two-Test series in Sri Lanka from August 15, while a separate T20I squad under Shreyas Iyer is expected to represent the country at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan from September 17 to October 3. That timeline provides a feasible window for the long-awaited Bangladesh tour, provided all logistical and administrative hurdles are cleared in time.
