Team India’s coaching setup could be headed for another significant overhaul, with uncertainty surrounding the future of Gautam Gambhir’s support staff despite some members still having time remaining on their contracts. According to a report in *The Times of India*, one senior member of the coaching group is expected to leave the national team and has already held discussions with an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise that operates teams across multiple T20 leagues.

The report suggests these developments are not a direct consequence of India’s disappointing white-ball performances in Ireland and England. Instead, the possibility of changes has reportedly been building behind the scenes for several months, well before India’s recent slump under T20I captain Shreyas Iyer.
When Gambhir took over as India’s head coach in July 2024, he assembled a trusted backroom staff by appointing Ryan ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar as assistant coaches. Former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel later joined as bowling coach ahead of the Bangladesh Test series. All three were handed two-year contracts with an option for a one-year extension and were widely regarded as Gambhir’s preferred choices after working closely with him in the IPL.

However, the coaching structure has already undergone one major change. Following India’s disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign in Australia during the 2024-25 season, Abhishek Nayar exited the setup, with Sitanshu Kotak taking over as batting coach.
Speculation around further changes has gathered pace after the BCCI decided to hand VVS Laxman responsibility for India’s upcoming Zimbabwe tour and the Asian Games campaign, rather than Gambhir’s full-time coaching unit. Sairaj Bahutale’s continued involvement with the national side has also sparked discussions that the board could be preparing to revamp its support staff in the near future.

Although the BCCI is expected to conduct a performance review after India’s ongoing white-ball tour of England, reports indicate that the meeting will primarily focus on the team’s results rather than coaching appointments. Nevertheless, uncertainty surrounding several support staff members has fuelled speculation that changes could be announced before India’s next major assignment, including the Test series against Sri Lanka.
Interestingly, reports of possible coaching changes are not entirely new. Last year, there were also suggestions that both Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate could come under pressure when India’s Test performances dipped.

According to the report, internal disagreements within the dressing room and differences between the selectors and the coaching staff have further complicated the situation. It also claimed that tensions have intensified since India’s home Test series defeat to South Africa, with the growing divide creating uncertainty over the future direction of the national team’s coaching setup.
