Star India batter Shubman Gill has been named India’s new ODI captain as the BCCI announced the squad for the upcoming Australia series. However, he will take over the reins from Rohit Sharma for the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia as well. Notably, this will be Gill’s first series as captain of the ODI team, having previously led the Test and T20I teams as well. However, the change in captaincy has been made considering the ICC ODI World Cup in 2027.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also announced the squad for the five-match T20I series, which will follow the ODI series. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has been named in the ODI squad and returns to the Indian setup along with Virat Kohli. The duo hasn’t played for India since the final of the Champions Trophy in March this year. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has been named the vice-captain.

Meanwhile, Gill, 26, has played 55 ODIs so far with 2775 runs and eight centuries to his name as well. It is also noteworthy that Ravindra Jadeja has not been included in the squad while Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are nursing their injuries as well. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODI series as well.
