On Wednesday (23 January), India has taken the 1-0 lead after winning the first ODI of the five-match ODI series against the hosts New Zealand at McLean Park (Napier).

After winning the toss, New Zealand was bundled out for just 157 runs in 38 overs. In reply (revised target 156 in 49 overs), India chased the low total in 34.5 overs after losing only two wickets.

i) Playing his 56th ODI match, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami (102 ODI wickets) completed his 100 ODI wickets.

  • Fastest Indian (according to no. of ODI matches) to complete 100 ODI wickets. The previous record holder was Irfan Pathan who had achieved this feat in 59 ODIs.
  • 20th Indian bowler and 13th Indian pacer to claim 100 ODI wickets.

ii) New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson scored 64 runs.

  • Sixth consecutive ODI half-centuries for Kane Williamson against India at home. It was also his sixth ODI innings against India at home.

iii) New Zealand was bowled out for just 157 runs (38 overs).

  • The second lowest completed ODI total for New Zealand against India in New Zealand. The record is 142 at Auckland on 27 March 1994.
  • The second lowest completed ODI total for New Zealand at McLean Park (Napier). The record is 152 against Sri Lanka on 31 January 2001.

iv) The Indian left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav had a bowling figure of 10-1-39-4.

  • Third best ODI bowling figure by an Indian bowler in New Zealand. The top two bowling figures in this list are 5/33 by Anil Kumble (against New Zealand at Wellington on 30 March 1994) and 4/23 by Javagal Srinath (against New Zealand at Auckland on 26 December 2002).

v) Playing his 118th ODI innings and 119 ODI matches, the Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan (5,065 runs) completed his 5,000 ODI runs. He has scored these all 5,065 ODI runs as an opener.

  • The second fastest (according to no. of ODI matches) batsman in overall to score 5,000 ODI runs. Virat Kohli is the record holder is Hashim Amla (South Africa) who had achieved this feat in 104 ODI matches.  
  • The second fastest (according to no. of ODI innings) Indian batsman to score 5,000 ODI runs. Virat Kohli is the record holder who had achieved this feat in 114 ODI innings.
  • 13th Indian batsman to score 5,000 ODI runs.
  • Fifth Indian opening batsman to score 5,000 ODI runs. The other Indian batsmen were Sachin Tendulkar (15,310 runs), Sourav Ganguly (9,146 runs), Virender Sehwag (7,240 runs) and Rohit Sharma (5,683 runs).

vi) At the end of this game, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli has scored 10,430 runs in ODI career.

  • 10th most ODI run scorer after surpassing the former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara (10,405 ODI runs).
