On Saturday (26 January), India won the second ODI of the five-match ODI series against the hosts New Zealand at the Bay Oval (Mount Maunganui) by 90 runs. With this victory, India has taken the 2-0 lead with three ODIs is still to be played.

After winning the toss, India decided to bat first and scored 324/4 at the end of 50 overs. In reply, New Zealand was bundled out for just 234 runs in 40.2 overs.

Here are some of the statistical highlights of the match:

i) Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan provided a 154-run partnership for the opening wicket.

  • The second highest ODI partnership for India against New Zealand in New Zealand. The record is 201*between Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag for the opening wicket at Hamilton on 11 March 2009.

ii) New Zealand left-arm pacer Trent Boult (401 wickets) completed his 400 international wickets.

  • Fifth New Zealand bowler to claim 400 or more international wickets. The other four bowlers are Daniel Vettori (696 wickets), Sir Richard Hadlee (589 wickets), Tim Southee (480 wickets) and Chris Cairns (419 wickets).
  • Only second New Zealand left-arm bowler to claim 400 or more international wickets. Former New Zealand left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori (696 runs) was the first one to achieve this feat.

iii) At the end of the match, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli has scored 1,242 ODI runs against New Zealand.

  • The second most run-scorer in the ODI history between India and New Zealand after surpassing the former New Zealand batsman Nathan Astle’s run tally 1,207 runs. The legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is the record holder with 1,750 runs.

iv) At the end of the match, the New Zealand left-arm pacer Trent Boult has taken 95 ODI wickets at home.

  • Most ODI wickets for a left-arm pacer at home. The previous record holder was the former Indian left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan with 94 ODI wickets at home.

 

v) Indian wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni has scored 10,414 runs in his ODI career.

  • Surpassing the legendary Caribbean cricketer Brian Lara, Dhoni becomes the 11th most run-scorer in ODI cricket history.

vi) India scored 324/4 in 50 overs.

  • India’s second highest ODI total in New Zealand. The record is 392/4 (50 overs) against New Zealand at Christchurch on 8 March 2009.

vii) During India’s innings, all the top-five batsmen played 40+ knocks.

  • First time in ODI history when all the top-five Indian batsmen played 40+ knocks in the same ODI innings.
  • The second time in ODI history when the five Indian batsmen played 40+ knocks in an ODI innings. The first such incident happened on 27 December 2004 against Bangladesh at Dhaka.
  • 10th time in ODI history when all the top-five batsmen played 40+ knocks in the same ODI innings.

viii) India won the match by 90 runs.

  • Largest ODI victory (by runs) for India in New Zealand. Their previous record was winning by 84 runs against New Zealand at Hamilton on 11 March 2009.
