West Indies vs India – Final of 1983 World Cup (June 25, 1983)
It was India’s best memorable ODI game at Lord’s. It was the 1983 Cricket World Cup final where the underdogs India met against the two-time World Cup champion West Indies. After West Indies sent the Indian team to bat first, the regular wickets restricted the Indian team to 183 runs (54.4 overs). While the opener Kris Srikkanth scored the highest runs of 38 runs, Mohinder Amarnath (26 runs) and Sandeep Patil (27 runs) were the only other Indian batsmen to reach in 20’s.
In reply, Indian bowlers and fielders dominated over the strong Caribbean batting line-up as they were bundled out for just 140 runs (52 overs) and India stunned the cricket world by claiming their first cricket World Cup as they won the final by 43 runs. While Viv Richards (33) and wicketkeeper-batsman Jeff Dujon (25) were the only West Indies batsmen to reach the 20-run mark, Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath picked up three wickets each. Mohinder Amarnath won the Player of the Match award for his crucial all-round contributions.
