England vs India – Final of 2002 NatWest series (tri-series) (July 13, 2002)

It was one of the best moments in Indian cricket history. England, who won the toss and decided to bat first, produced a mammoth total of 325/5 (50 overs) with the help of dual century by the opener Marcus Trescothick (109) and skipper Nasser Hussain (115).

In reply, Indian openers started very well as Virender Sehwag and skipper Sourav Ganguly put an impressive 106-run opening partnership in very quick time. But, since that partnership was broken by the pacer Alex Tudor, Indian innings suffered a major batting collapse.

As Ganguly (60 off 43 balls) and Sehwag’s (45 off 49 balls) dismissal in quick succession, Dinesh Mongia (9), Sachin Tendulkar (14) and Rahul Dravid (5) also departed cheaply as India suddenly went down from 106/0 to 146/5.

Two young cricketers, Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif came to rescue the team as they put a crucial 121-run partnership for the sixth wicket that set for an entertaining finish.

After Yuvraj was dismissed on 69 runs, Kaif carried the innings on his shoulder with some lower-order support. The match entered in the last over, where Kaif and Zaheer Khan snatched a thrilling two runs and secured a memorable ODI victory as it was the only second highest ODI chase at that time. India scored 326/8 in 49.3 overs while Kaif remained unbeaten on 87 runs won the Player of the Match award.
