During the fifth match of the 11th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at Chennai, Andre Russell played a sensational innings which aided in winning him the orange cap. After being put in to bat by MS Dhoni, Russell’s swashbuckling knock came after Kolkata Knight Riders were reduced to 89-5 in 10 overs.
Russell came in to bat at the halfway mark of the innings, changing the direction of the innings in the second half. Russell started off well with an orthodox cover drive against Shane Watson in the 12th over. In the following over against Dwayne Bravo, he hit his first six of the match.
There was no stopping Russell after that. In the 16th over against Shardul Thakur, Russell towered two consecutive sixes as displayed signs of what was about to come. The next over of the innings, bowled by Bravo, saw Russell hit three sixes against Bravo.
If this was not enough, Russell hit three sixes off consecutive balls in the next Bravo over, the penultimate over of the innings. After hitting the first one over deep midwicket, he followed it with sixes over the long-on area. The 29-year old all-rounder was at his utmost best today, scoring 88* (36), with the help of a four and 11 sixes.
Having scored 15* runs in the first match against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Kolkata, he has now scored 103 runs in the tourney, the highest by any player.
