Chennai Super Kings once again reigned supreme in a close encounter at the Chepauk Stadium against Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR after losing early wickets managed to launch themselves past 200 with Russell thrusters. The chase from Chennai started off brilliantly but soon stagnated. It was revived wonderfully by Sam Billings who played a key role. The turning point of the match then occurred in the 15th over.
By the end of 14th overs, Chennai stood at 124/3 with needing 75 runs to win from the last 36 ball. English import Tom Curran ran in to bowl the 15th over. Sam Billings at that stage was batting 9*(6). Dhoni faced the first ball of the over and completed a quick single. The two Englishmen faced each other.
Tom Curran bowled full and straight, Sam Billings in a bid to overhaul the required run-rate tried hard to clear the ropes. The ball instead went in the air over mid-off where Robin Uthappa was stationed. He ran backwards but alas! the catch was dropped. Billings earned a reprieve, one that haunted the Kolkata fans.
In next overs, Billings accelerated at an unbelievable rate and soon raced to 56 runs off 23 balls to get CSK back in the match. The drop cost KKR a total of 47 runs from 17 balls. By the time, Billings was dismissed CSK needed only 19 runs from 8 balls.
Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja then slammed two sixes in the last over of Vinay Kumar to seal another memorable win for Chennai Super Kings. Sam Billings undoubtedly was declared as the Man of the Match.
