Kolkata Knight Riders won their away match against Kings XI Punjab at KXIP’s home stadium, Holkar Stadium, Indore. KKR batting first, managed to post their highest score which was also the highest team score in this IPL edition. In reply, all hopes of Punjab relied heavily on Gayle and Rahul but one of them failed to perform.

Chris Gayle

Chasing 246, it had to be Gayle-Rahul show tonight at least for the first 150 runs. This was in consideration that KXIP did not have a luxury of batting depth tonight as they went in with only 5 pure batsmen. KL Rahul was in stunning form and continued at his own pace.

Building the platform, KL Rahul smacked Sunil Narine for two sixes in the first over. They continued the momentum and made most of the first five overs. KXIP at the end of the first five overs amassed 51 runs. The last over of the powerplay was handed to Andre Russell.

Russell conceded a six on the first ball as Chris Gayle smacked a full-blooded six over midwicket. The west Indian all-rounder made a recovery and bowled two very good balls in the reply which yielded no runs. Russell bowled a short delivery next and Gayle trying to make the most edged it which was lapped up by Dinesh Karthik.

The agony was not over for Punjab though. Mayank Agarwal faced another short ball first up and was out caught in the deep square leg. Punjab lost two in two and that set them back in the mammoth chase. From 58/2 they ended up to 214/8 and KKR won the match by 31 runs.
