Hosts Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a defeat against the bottom-placed team and the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium (Pune) on Saturday night.

Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 75-run knock went in vain

MI captain Rohit Sharma decided to field first after winning the toss. With the help of Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 75 runs knock, CSK managed to score 169/5 in 20 overs.

Chasing down that target, MI had a good start in the second innings of the game. They capitalised that start successfully as they chased down that target in 19.4 overs after losing only two wickets. Mi won this game by 8 wickets with two balls to spare.

Now, we will briefly talk about some important reasons for CSK’s defeat in this match.

Failed to score quick runs in the middle

CSK was slow in the middle-over of their innings. After getting a good start in the powerplay as they scored 51/1, CSK added 66 runs in next 9 overs despite losing only one wicket. Later, in last 5 overs, they added 52-run on the board but that was not enough for the team.

There was a phase in between 11-15th over of that innings where CSK had no boundaries in 26 consecutive deliveries. It slowed the innings flow as that hampered on the team total.

Deepak Chahar injury

In-form pacer Deepak Chahar got a hamstring injury during his third over. As an opening bowler, his four-over spell was very important but he only managed to bowl 2.1 overs before getting ruled out from the game.

He failed to make a comeback to bowl for the further moment as CSK skipper missed him very much in the game.

Failed to take wickets

In T20 cricket, the regular wicket-taking ability is most important for the bowling team. CSK failed to dismiss the MI batsmen early as they provided some good partnerships one by one and took away the game from the hosts. Despite the required run-rate was growing up slowly, specially in the late moment it became challenging, but MI batsmen made that successfully as they were enough set on the pitch.
