Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was unbeaten in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) by winning their first three games of the cash-rich, but now, Mumbai Indians (MI) have stopped their winning run by defeating the visitors by 37 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. With the thumping win, Mumbai’s mediocre Net Run Rate also taken some hike.

Mumbai didn’t start well with the bat after being asked to bat first. Deepak Chahar drew first blood, dismissing Quinton de Kock early in the innings. Rohit Sharma also found it tough to get into his zone and he was dismissed to Ravindra Jadeja’s very first ball. Yuvraj Singh was the third wicket to fall and as Imran Tahir got his prized scalp. At the other end, Suryakumar Yadav held the Mumbai’s innings as he scored a fifty in 38 deliveries.

SKY also put made a crucial partnership of 62 runs with Krunal Pandya and set the platform for a final flourish. Pandya also churned out a priceless 32-ball 42 before falling to Mohit Sharma. Surya was nipped out by Dwayne Bravo soon after Krunal. However, it was the onslaught from Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard that helped MI to reach a respectable total of 170 in 20 overs. Bravo conceded a humungous 29 in his final over over the innings.

CSK got off to a rather poor start, losing both the openers early. While Jason Behrendorff found Ambati Rayudu’s outside edge, Lasith Malinga nipped out Shane Watson. Suresh Raina smacked two fours and a six, but Behrendorff dismissed him as well owing to a brilliant catch from Pollard. Thereafter, the experienced MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav got CSK back in the game and steadied the ship to some extent with a stand of 51 runs from 55 deliveries.

Dhoni anchored well before falling prey to Hardik after scoring a 21-ball 12. Jadhav scored his half-century in 46 balls, but the required rate kept climbing at an alarming rate. Ravindra Jadeja came following Dhoni’s dismissal and got out to Pandya courtesy of a brilliant catch from De Kock. Jadhav amassed 58 runs from 54 balls, but his efforts went in vain. For MI, Malinga and Hardik picked up three wickets each as CSk only managed to reach 133/8 in their quota of 20 overs.
