The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) came to a thrilling conclusion on May 29th after two months of exhilarating cricketing action. The final match saw Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clinch the trophy with a nail-biting last-ball victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Throughout the IPL 2023 season, fans were treated to some extraordinary batting displays and outstanding bowling performances. Young talents from the ten participating franchises showcased their skills and left a lasting impression. However, there were also a few established players who failed to live up to expectations. Let’s delve into the players who had a disappointing season in the Indian Premier League 2023.

Openers: Prithvi Shaw and Harry Brook

Prithvi Shaw has failed to do much in IPL 2023

At the top of the batting order in our “Flop XI” are Prithvi Shaw and Harry Brook. Shaw, who had received high praise from Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting before the season, endured a forgettable campaign. Despite being given multiple opportunities, Shaw struggled to find his rhythm and managed a mere 106 runs at an average of 13.2 across eight matches. His inconsistency led to his eventual exclusion from the team.

Joining Shaw as an opener in the “Flop XI” is Harry Brook. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batsman was one of the costliest purchases at ₹13.25 crore during the IPL auction. However, apart from one standout performance, Brook failed to make a significant impact and ended the season with just 190 runs from 11 innings, averaging 21.1.

Middle-order: Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, Dinesh Karthik (WK)

Moving to the middle order, we have Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, and Dinesh Karthik. Tripathi, who had an exceptional IPL season last year and even made his international debut before IPL 2023, struggled to replicate his previous form. Representing SRH, Tripathi could only muster 273 runs at an average of 22.7, failing to deliver the big scores he was capable of.

Deepak Hooda, a talented player for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), also had a forgettable season. He struggled to make an impact with the bat, scoring a meager 84 runs from 12 matches, averaging just 7.6. Hooda will now face an uphill battle to reclaim his spot in the national team.

Dinesh Karthik, a veteran wicketkeeper-batsman for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), had an uncharacteristically poor season. After an impressive IPL 2022 campaign and a successful international comeback, Karthik failed to replicate his previous form. In 13 innings, he scored only 140 runs at an average of less than 12. Additionally, his wicketkeeping errors added to RCB’s woes in crucial matches.

All-rounders: Riyan Parag, Shahbaz Ahmed, Jason Holder

In the all-rounder category, Riyan Parag, Jason Holder, and Shahbaz Ahmed make the list. Parag, a young talent representing the Rajasthan Royals (RR), struggled to leave a mark in IPL 2023. Despite the franchise’s faith in him, Parag could only muster 78 runs at an average of 13.00 from seven innings. Jason Holder, RR’s marquee signing, failed to make a significant impact in both the batting and bowling departments.

With just four wickets at an average of 71 and a paltry batting contribution of 12 runs across three innings, Holder couldn’t live up to expectations. Shahbaz Ahmed, a key player for RCB in IPL 2022, had a disappointing season this time around. Despite being given ample opportunities, he could only manage 42 runs and a solitary wicket in the ten matches he played.

Bowlers: Chris Jordan, Umran Malik, Umesh Yadav

Shifting the focus to the bowlers, the “Flop XI” features Chris Jordan, Umesh Yadav, and Umran Malik. Chris Jordan, although unsold at the IPL 2023 auction, was later picked up by the Mumbai team as a replacement for the injured Jofra Archer. However, Jordan struggled to make an impact, taking only three wickets at an average of 79.0. He conceded over 40 runs in four of the six innings he bowled, resulting in an economy rate of 10.77, which was the second-worst in IPL 2023 among bowlers who bowled more than 20 overs.

Umesh Yadav, an IPL stalwart representing the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), had a forgettable season. With just one wicket in eight matches, Umesh had his worst bowling performance in an IPL season. His average of 189 demonstrated his ineffectiveness, and it remains to be seen whether KKR will retain him for the next edition of the tournament.

Umran Malik, who was one of the brightest prospects for SRH after an impressive season in 2022, found himself spending most of the IPL 2023 season on the bench. While some critics argue that the SRH management could have handled him better, his numbers indicate that he lacked the impact he had shown previously. Across eight innings, Umran managed only five wickets at an average of 43.3 and an economy rate of 10.8, which were not up to the mark compared to his previous performances.
