The build-up to IPL 2026 has already been disrupted by a series of player absences, with franchises forced to rethink combinations even before the tournament begins. One of the biggest early setbacks comes for Punjab Kings, as New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson will miss the opening phase of the season following the birth of his first child.

Ferguson, who recently welcomed a baby boy, has chosen to prioritise family time after a demanding international schedule. The fast bowler had briefly left the T20 World Cup midway to be present for the birth before rejoining the New Zealand squad. Now, with IPL commitments looming, he has opted for a short break before heading to India later in the tournament.

“Just had a wee son, trying to spend as much time as I can at home and help the wife out,” Lockie Ferguson said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. He also indicated that he would join the IPL only for the latter stages, balancing personal responsibilities with professional commitments.

Reflecting on the hectic calendar, Ferguson admitted that managing workload has become increasingly challenging. “Sometimes the hard part is selecting when to take a rest… I think this is pretty fair,” he added, acknowledging his wife’s support during the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals have been dealt a significant blow with Sam Curran set to miss IPL 2026 due to a suspected groin injury. The England all-rounder, who joined RR in a high-profile trade involving Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja, was expected to play a crucial role with both bat and ball.

Curran last featured in the T20 World Cup semifinal against India, where he endured a tough outing. His absence leaves a gap in RR’s balance, especially in the middle order and death overs. In his place, South Africa’s Donovan Ferreira is likely to take on the finisher’s role.

In another setback, Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2026 due to a hamstring injury, dealing a blow to Chennai Super Kings. Confirming the development, CSK CEO KS Viswanathan said, “It is a big blow for us. Ellis is a crucial bowler, especially in the death overs.”

The list of absentees doesn’t end there. Indian pacer Harshit Rana is set to miss the full season due to injury, while Australian quicks Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will be unavailable for the initial matches. With multiple teams dealing with injuries and player unavailability, IPL 2026 is shaping up to be a test of squad depth and adaptability right from the outset.
