The business end of the IPL season is typically when the Mumbai Indians (MI) hit top gear, but IPL 2026 hasn’t followed the familiar script. A stunning unbeaten 101 from Tilak Varma against the Gujarat Titans (GT) briefly hinted at a late surge. However, back-to-back defeats against Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad have stalled their momentum. With just a handful of games left, MI find themselves second from bottom, running out of time to revive their playoff hopes.

CSK aren’t in a comfortable position either. Sitting sixth on the points table with only one more win than MI, they too are approaching a must-win phase. With teams like Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad pulling ahead, the margin for error has virtually disappeared for both sides.
Fitness concerns have further complicated matters. CSK are closely monitoring MS Dhoni (calf), while MI await clarity on Rohit Sharma (hamstring). These two stalwarts have defined this iconic rivalry for years, and their absence—or limited involvement—has been felt. Meanwhile, current captains Ruturaj Gaikwad and Hardik Pandya are yet to fully stamp their authority this season.

Team combinations remain another concern. MI have rotated as many as 22 players, while CSK have used 19, reflecting a lack of clarity in their best XIs. Their use of the Impact Player rule has also raised eyebrows. CSK’s early introduction of Sarfaraz Khan as a batting substitute during the powerplay has backfired at times, while MI’s decision to bring in Shardul Thakur without utilising him against SRH added to the confusion.
Historically, this rivalry remains finely balanced. In 40 IPL meetings, MI lead narrowly with 21 wins to CSK’s 19. With both teams desperate for points, this clash could define their seasons.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Chennai Super Kings are likely to be without MS Dhoni once again, with head coach Stephen Fleming confirming that the veteran has aggravated an existing calf injury. His absence continues to disrupt CSK’s balance, especially in crunch situations. In their previous outing, an early wobble on a lively surface forced CSK to introduce Sarfaraz Khan as an Impact Player inside the powerplay. Looking ahead, the team could consider bringing back left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary, while youngster Ramakrishna Ghosh remains in contention for a potential debut.
Probable XI: 1Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (capt), Sarfaraz Khan/Urvil Patel, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, Jamie Overton, Akeal Hosein, Anshul Kamboj, Mukesh Choudhary/Ramakrishna Ghosh, Gurjapneet Singh, Noor Ahmad
Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai Indians face similar concerns, with Rohit Sharma unlikely to return due to a hamstring issue. If Quinton de Kock is also unavailable, MI may persist with Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton, who impressed with a brisk partnership against SRH. On the bowling front, MI could choose between Shardul Thakur and emerging pacer Krish Bhagat.
Probable XI: Ryan Rickelton (wk), Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav, Naman Dhir, Hardik Pandya (capt), Tilak Varma, Robin Minz, Shardul Thakur/Krish Bhagat, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, AM Ghazanfar, Ashwani Kumar
