Punjab Kings are rapidly running out of room for error in IPL 2026. What began as another promising campaign with six early victories has now spiralled into a worrying slump, with Shreyas Iyer’s side suffering five consecutive defeats at the most crucial stage of the tournament. Their latest setback came in Dharamsala, where PBKS once again failed to defend a 200-plus total, leaving their playoff hopes hanging by a thread.

Despite the crushing loss, captain Shreyas Iyer remained optimistic about the road ahead. PBKS still have two league matches remaining and must win both to stay alive in the playoff race. “Definitely excited about the next opportunity. An afternoon game and we need to win two out of two,” Iyer said after the defeat, while also praising Tilak Varma for his match-winning innings.

Punjab Kings looked like one of the strongest teams in the competition after the mega auction rebuild under head coach Ricky Ponting. The franchise had transformed into an aggressive and fearless batting unit, even reaching the IPL final last season. However, IPL 2026 has exposed several flaws in their campaign. Ponting’s frustrated reactions from the dugout have become a recurring image this season. PBKS have struggled badly in the field, dropping crucial catches, while their bowling attack has failed to deliver consistently under pressure.

Even in high-scoring conditions, their inability to control key moments has repeatedly cost them matches. In contrast, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru have handled setbacks far better this season. Led by a resurgent Virat Kohli, RCB have continued the momentum from their title-winning 2025 campaign and remain firmly among the top contenders in IPL 2026. Even after early-season defeats, RCB quickly regrouped and avoided a losing streak — something PBKS have failed to do. Their strong mentality and ability to bounce back have played a major role in their successful campaign.

The conditions in Dharamsala could once again heavily influence the outcome. The venue has largely favoured pace bowlers so far, although PBKS did use Yuzvendra Chahal effectively in the previous night game. However, this upcoming afternoon fixture presents fresh uncertainty for both teams. Interestingly, RCB also hold a dominant recent head-to-head record against Punjab Kings, winning six of the last seven meetings since 2023, including Qualifier 1 and the IPL 2025 final.

Punjab Kings could receive a major boost ahead of their crucial IPL 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with express pacer Lockie Ferguson likely to return after recovering from a minor niggle. Ferguson missed the Delhi Capitals game in Dharamsala, while Ben Dwarshuis and, later, Xavier Bartlett stepped in as replacements. However, PBKS head of sports science Andrew Leipus sounded confident about Ferguson’s availability, saying the team is “pretty sure” to have a full squad to choose from.

PBKS will also rely heavily on Arshdeep Singh in the powerplay. While Virat Kohli has scored at a strike rate of 174.13 against the left-arm pacer, Arshdeep has enjoyed success against Devdutt Padikkal, dismissing him four times in just 43 balls.

Probable XII: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (c), Suryansh Shedge, Shashank Singh, Azmatullah Omarzai, Marco Jansen, Harpreet Brar, Lockie Ferguson, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal

RCB are still without opener Phil Salt, who remains in England for treatment on his finger injury. Young Jacob Bethell is expected to continue opening alongside Kohli. RCB’s experienced pace duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood could prove decisive once again. Bhuvneshwar has dominated PBKS’ top order historically, dismissing Prabhsimran Singh five times, while Hazlewood has removed Shreyas Iyer four times in 22 deliveries.

Probable XII: Jacob Bethell, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (c), Tim David, Jitesh Sharma, Venkatesh Iyer, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rasikh Salam Dar, Jacob Duffy, Josh Hazlewood
