Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) may still be mathematically alive in the IPL 2026 playoff race, but their campaign has largely been defined by inconsistency, injuries, and missed opportunities. Sitting eighth on the points table with 11 points, KKR still have a slim chance of sneaking into the top four if results elsewhere go in their favour and they manage to win their remaining matches convincingly. The two-time champions have struggled to build momentum throughout the season.

Repeated batting collapses, poor Powerplay performances with both bat and ball, and untimely injuries have prevented them from stringing together a strong run. Yet, heading into their crucial clash against the Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens, KKR know their playoff hopes are still alive — however faint they may be. A major concern for Kolkata remains the fitness of mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy.
The 34-year-old, who missed the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and played through a sore foot against Gujarat Titans, was seen training briefly ahead of the Mumbai fixture. However, reports of him limping as he enters and leaves the field have raised doubts about whether he is fully fit for such a high-pressure encounter.
Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, are dealing with their own fitness worries. Captain Hardik Pandya missed the Dharamsala trip due to a back issue but has since resumed full-intensity training. The all-rounder batted and bowled extensively during MI’s practice session and is expected to return to the playing XI against KKR.

Although Mumbai have already been eliminated from playoff contention, there is still plenty riding on Pandya personally. Since rejoining MI in 2024, the all-rounder has struggled to consistently deliver impactful performances, and a strong finish to IPL 2026 could be important for both his confidence and future leadership conversations.
The Eden Gardens pitch is expected to favour spinners once again, particularly on the dry surface used earlier this season against Rajasthan Royals, where Varun starred with a match-winning spell. Weather conditions in Kolkata are expected to remain extremely hot and humid, adding another layer of challenge to an already high-stakes contest.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Kolkata Knight Riders head into their crucial IPL 2026 clash against the Mumbai Indians with major fitness concerns surrounding key bowlers Varun Chakaravarthy and Matheesha Pathirana. Varun was seen limping during a light training session at Eden Gardens, raising doubts over his match fitness ahead of the must-win encounter.
Pathirana, meanwhile, did not attend either of KKR’s practice sessions after pulling up injured just eight balls into his debut appearance for the franchise. If the Sri Lankan pacer misses out, KKR could hand an opportunity to Zimbabwe quick Blessing Muzarabani, who has not featured since April 2. KKR may also rely heavily on veteran spinner Sunil Narine, especially against Rohit Sharma, whom he has dismissed 10 times in T20 cricket.

Mumbai Indians (MI)

For Mumbai Indians, both Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav returned to full-intensity training and are expected to play. However, injuries have ruled Quinton de Kock and Raj Bawa out for the remainder of the season. MI will once again bank on Jasprit Bumrah, who boasts an excellent record against KKR middle-order batter Rinku Singh in pressure situations.
