The Indian Premier League could soon witness a major structural change, with the tournament reportedly planning a return to a complete home-and-away format. If implemented, the move would increase the number of IPL matches from the current 74 to 94, making it the biggest season in the league’s history. However, the expansion will depend heavily on securing a larger slot in the already crowded international cricket calendar.

Since the IPL expanded from eight teams to 10 in 2022 with the inclusion of the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, the tournament has operated under a group-based scheduling system. As a result, not every team faces all opponents twice during the league stage.

Before the expansion, the IPL followed a traditional double round-robin format in which every franchise played each other both home and away. That structure was widely considered fair and balanced, but maintaining it with 10 teams would significantly increase the total number of matches and extend the tournament’s duration.

At present, the international schedule under the Future Tours Programme (FTP) is locked until 2027, leaving limited room for immediate expansion. Increasing the number of double-headers was discussed as a possible solution, but broadcasters reportedly have concerns about the impact on viewership and advertising revenue if too many matches are packed into a single day.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that the BCCI is exploring the possibility of securing a larger window in the next FTP cycle after 2027. However, he also clarified that adding more teams is not currently under consideration.

“With the given set of teams, only we can go for more number of matches. So it doesn’t make sense as of now to increase the number of teams,” ओीहल Dhumal said while discussing the league’s future plans.

The 19th edition of the IPL began on March 28 and is scheduled to conclude on May 31, with the tournament continuing to grow in popularity and commercial value every season.
