With Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the second Test at Edgbaston still uncertain, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has put his weight behind Akash Deep as the ideal replacement. As India carefully manages Bumrah’s workload during the five-Test series, Pathan believes that Akash’s bowling style makes him the best fit to step in for the star pacer.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Irfan Pathan observed, “From what I’ve seen in the nets, Akash Deep is getting into rhythm. He’s very much in the Mohammad Shami mould—focused on seam, swing, and consistent lines rather than banging the ball in short.”

India’s pace unit, apart from Bumrah, lacked sting in the series opener at Headingley. Despite centuries from Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, England chased down 371 with ease, exposing India’s bowling vulnerabilities in the final innings. Pathan feels that Akash’s strengths—especially his upright seam and ability to generate late movement—could pose serious challenges to England’s attacking approach.

“Akash’s ability to move the ball late and consistently hit the right lengths could trouble the English batters, especially if they continue playing aggressively. That makes him a better option than someone like Arshdeep at this point. If Bumrah doesn’t play, Akash should get the nod,” Irfan Pathan added.

Meanwhile, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate remained optimistic about India’s chances, even without their spearhead. “We believe we can draw level or keep the series competitive even if Bumrah sits out. It’s about managing his load smartly over five matches,” ten Doeschate said.

He also hinted that the final call on Bumrah’s inclusion would come on match day. “At some point, we’ll need our strongest attack. The question is when to unleash it,” he said ahead of the July 2 showdown at Edgbaston.
